Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum
LKCNHM inherited the natural history collection from its predecessor, the Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research (RMBR) (established in 1998), whose collection was that of the Zoological Reference Collection (ZRC) (formally opened on 31 October 1988), which of course stems from the original Raffles Museum that was renamed the National Museum of Singapore in 1965. The museum is composed of two major entities. The most important of course, is the plant and animal collections which form the core of its existence and this is research-centric. Then there is the public gallery section, and this also includes the teaching and outreach components of the museum. The building management and administrative office support their activities.

The Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum is staffed by 16 scientists, curators, museum officers and collection personnel as well as 18 outreach officers and administrative staff. The museum, a seven-storey green building providing 8,500 square metres of space, is home to over 560,000 catalogued lots and over a million specimens from throughout the region.

The exhibition gallery is divided into 2 floors of about 2,500 sq m. The main floor is about the history and diversity of life on Earth, with a strong emphasis on Southeast Asian plants and animals. While the mezzanine floor is on Heritage. These two exhibits are ticketed but there are also public areas around the museum such as the Phylogenetic Garden, where it showcases how plants and habitats have evolved; and we have included native plants as far as possible. THe other public accessible area will be the Mangrove, Swamps and Dryland Forest where it features some of the unique plants which are specially adapted to inundated soils or the mangrove habitat.

*Admission is strictly based on timing only to avoid overcrowding and ensure maximum visit

McRitchie Reservior & Central Catchment and Nature Reserve
Acting as a large green lung situated right in the centre of Singapore is the Central Catchment Nature Reserve. The largest of the nature reserves in Singapore, the Central Catchment Nature Reserve occupies over 2,000 hectares of forest cover and is home to some of the richest forests in terms of biodiversity.

Dipterocarp forests, which are species-rich primary lowland forests, were once abundant in Singapore before human settlements developed. Today, less than 0.5% of the original primary forest cover remains and it can only be found in small patches within the Central Catchment Nature Reserve and the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve. An even rarer forest type in Singapore is the primary freshwater swamp forest, with the most significant remaining patch being the Nee Soon Swamp Forest in the Central Catchment Nature Reserve.

The existing habitats are home to a magnificent diversity of plants. Examples include the Keruing (Dipterocarpus spp.) and Meranti (Shorea spp.) as well as the critically endangered Banded Leaf Monkey (Presbytis femoralis) and the Sunda Pangolin (Manis javanica).
